August in Yuma always has a particular energy to it — the summer heat is still very much with us, but there’s that unmistakable undercurrent of change as families start thinking about back-to-school routines, college move-in dates, and everything in between. Here at Yuma Sonoma Oral Surgery, we feel that shift every single year, and August 2026 was no exception. It’s one of my favorite months to be practicing in this community, because we genuinely get to help people cross important thresholds — whether that’s a young adult heading off to college with one less dental concern, or a neighbor finally addressing something they’ve been putting off all summer.

This past month, we had the privilege of caring for 92 patients from the 85364 ZIP code alone, and the procedure mix told a story that felt very true to the season. Wisdom tooth extractions were, not surprisingly, the dominant need — we performed 53 of them throughout August. This aligns with a pattern we see every summer in Yuma: students and young adults take advantage of their time off to handle wisdom tooth issues before the demands of the school year or college life make recovery far less convenient. Third molar problems rarely wait patiently, and the families in this community are smart about addressing them on their own timeline rather than letting an emergency dictate the situation.

Alongside the wisdom tooth cases, we completed 55 surgical extractions this month — procedures that go a step beyond routine removals and require the kind of specialized surgical care our team is trained to provide. These ranged in complexity, but every single one of them represented someone in the Yuma area taking a meaningful step toward better oral health. We also placed 2 dental implants and performed 1 bone grafting procedure this month. While those numbers are smaller, they carry enormous significance for the individuals involved — implants and grafting are transformative treatments that restore both function and confidence in ways that ripple through everyday life.

From a seasonal standpoint, August is one of the most important months for oral health awareness across the Yuma community. Back-to-school season tends to put dental care front of mind for parents, which is genuinely encouraging. Wisdom teeth that have been quietly causing low-grade discomfort all year tend to get addressed now, before fall schedules become overwhelming. I always encourage families to think of this window as an opportunity — not just for wisdom teeth, but for any oral surgery consultation that’s been lingering on the to-do list. The monsoon heat may keep us indoors, but it also creates a natural recovery window that summer uniquely provides.

It is a genuine privilege to serve the people of Yuma month after month, procedure by procedure. Oral surgery isn’t something most people look forward to, and I understand that completely. Our goal at Yuma Sonoma Oral Surgery is to make every experience as comfortable, clear, and supportive as possible — from the first consultation call to the final follow-up appointment. Whether you’re a longtime neighbor or new to the area, we welcome you warmly. If you or someone in your family has been thinking about a wisdom tooth evaluation, an implant consultation, or any oral surgery concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office. We’re here, we’re listening, and we’d be honored to help.
